Sen. John McCain will endorse former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney’s presidential bid Wednesday, several news sources reported early Wednesday morning.
McCain, who defeated Romney in 2008 to win the GOP presidential nomination, will announce his backing of Romney at an event in New Hampshire, a former McCain aide told Politico.
A McCain spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment early Wednesday morning, the Washington Post reported.
Polls show Romney with a more than 20-point lead in New Hampshire, which holds its first-in-the-nation primary on Jan. 10.
McCain’s support of his former fierce rival -- one day after the first nominating contest of the cycle – is a testament to the strength of Romney’s Tuesday performance, the Post suggested. It’s also a sign that some of the GOP establishment is falling in quickly behind Romney’s campaign, likely in the hope of heading off an extended primary fight.
